This old recipe from an Iowa farm makes a scrumptious cake!
German Apple Cake
2 cups white sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp salt 1 tsp soda 2 cups flour 1 cup oil 2 tsp cinnamon nuts (optional) 1 tsp vanilla 4 cups apples (Wealthy apples preferred)
Mix ingredients in a bowl (do not use mixer as batter is very thick). Spread batter in greased and floured 9 x 13" pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 - 60 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream or icing (see separate recipe)

Perfect topping for German Apple Cake!
German Apple Cake Icing
1 8 oz. pkg cream cheese 3 tsp margerine, melted 2 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp vanilla
Mix icing ingredients well and spread on cooled cake.

This is a great cake that has been a 75 year favorite in our family.
Aunt Verne's Applesauce Cake
Cake: 1 1/2 cups apple sauce 1 cup sugar 1 cup shortening 2 tsp soda 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp cloves 1 tsp nutmeg 1 egg 2 cups flour 1 cup raisins
Penuche Icing: 2 cups brown sugar 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup butter 1 tsp vanilla
Cake: Mix together apple sauce, sugar, shortening, soda and spices. Beat in egg. Mix in flour and raisins.
Bake at 350 degrees until toothpick comes out almost clean.
Cool cake and frost with Penuche Icing.
Penuche Icing: Mix together sugar, milk and butter. Stir over low heat until melted. Then, stirring constantly, bring to a full boil. Boil for 4 minutes. Cool, add vanilla and beat until it thickens.
